Facts about our MOON
- Moon is much smaller than the earth about 42 moons would fit inside the Earth. It is also made of the earth! scientists believe it to be a part of the earth broken off due to an asteroid strike billions of years ago.
- There is no SKY on the moon. Sounds weird doesn't it? The Apollo 11 landed on the lunar surface during the moon-day, but the sky looks black as it always does. This is because there is no atmosphere on the moon which refracts sunlight and blue being the longest wave length scatters and makes the sky appear blue. On the moon the sun looks white and the sky black. But the moon surface reflects sunlight and hence there is a shimmer of light enough to read a book by during the day.
- The same side of the moon is always facing the earth. Hence the dark-side was only seen through lunar probes sent in 1960's.
- There are large craters on the moon, some 95 kms in width, the moon surface is pock-marked, evidence of a tumultuous past.
- Moon has a basalt like sand which is the color of concrete.
