What's with the 'mad cow' *#*&$?????

Well. I have been asked on several occasions why I refer to myself with the dubious title of the "mad cow!" For one thing, and lets get that straight at the start - I admire cows a lot, hence the title; and it is hardly derogatory. Cows are the most gentle of creatures and the look about them is soft, caressing, and flowy. They are so calm and I have yet to see one in a hurry all frazzled and fried (excuse the pun! totally uncalled for at this delicate of moments.) What to wax lyrical about yoga and deep-breathing, and meditation and stillness and quitetude, one look at a serene cow is enough to send one glimpses of nirvana.

Cows are resilient as well, somehow, the thought of a cow defeated, dejected and in despair doesn't seem to fit in, cows bring to mind a complete picture of strength and permanence. If you think that I am going too far in my unstinting admiration of the bovine species then halt and take a deep breath and ponder on this most astonishing of facts; why are cows revered in Hinduism, what is the symbolism of the cow in that most philosophical of religions?

And then to the question of all questions; can we have a mad cow? and if yes, what is that mad cow like and what is it capable of? We have all heard of the disastrous mad cow disease that hits the European countries every few years and lays to waste thousands of these most gentle of creatures. But, here the connotations of what makes a cow mad are slightly different. A cow is mad, in my opinion, in the world of thoughts and ideas, when she is perturbed, when her peaceful existence is tried and tested by the situations around her, when, and its always a she cow (somehow the suffering mad cow brings to mind perturbed and distressed damsels and never a male of any species!) who are by the force of circumstance pressed to give up their peaceful existence and shuffle from wave to wave on a tumultuous ocean of human misery.

A cow is hardly elegant in the 'delicate' sense of the word, yet, if you actually think about it and like me take hours in watching one lolling in the fields or wherever, you'd notice a certain regal grace about the languid movements. She is cool and collected, as if she is some English lady out to tea in the park, and would soon take out her hanky and dab her lips and face with it!

Mad cows are nothing if not rebellious. They have abandoned the softer ways of their sisters and done with being a push over. These 'mad cows' have come into their own and now demand the exclusive right to give up their solitary sedentary calm ways to be able to vent out their frustrations and anger!
