bearded, born-again Muslims, who have made the sins of others their business. We have all kinds of weirdos doing the social rounds - with a probably CIA employed, red-beret donning, fire-brandishing, voluble man who talks in a strange fashion and hardly stops to take a breath to born-again pop-stars of yesteryears who supplement their income by designing over the top sherwanis and khusas for the affluent grooms (whither is the Islamic modesty in dress and manner?)
Women talking about spirituality as if its something bought from a shelf. UFFF! nothing is more tiresome than hearing shallow women counsel and lecture others on how to 'meditate' do 'yoga' learn the various arts of living, being and saying. Spirituality doesn't descend on you like a migraine headache, just because you have read a few books on self-esteem and self-help, it is a whole way of looking and living life which goes much beyond superficial acts. Do we even begin to understand what it is? or do we always confuse it with some other belief system or way of thinking.
Malls - the fluorescent lights, slippery floors, over the top décor from hell, over-priced merchandise, stifling and stale air-conditioned air that is being taken in and exhaled at all times by a throng of people. The garish lights, with useless things on sale, promotional kiosks to occasional TV anchors groping shoppers to share their views on tape. Why do we copy the worst of the features of the western world?
Graffiti on the walls! It is a shame and it literally pains me to see new walls, building surfaces, underpass walls all pasted with advertisements of Alims, who'd make your every wish come true, to political slogans, to admonishments and warnings against urinating! Please, why can't we let the walls be? Why do we have to abuse our enemies publicly by painting F**K this person or that? Why are we so ruthless with our own and other people's property.
Women not knowing their own rights. Women who act dumb and are dumb. Women who are lazy and never want to know things for themselves, and rely too much on men in their lives. Women not asking for right of divorce when they get married, not asking for haq mehar at the time of marriage and not standing up for themsleves when abused.
Double Standards in our society, where men can get away with murder, while women must put on a garb of piteousness. Men can flaunt their waywardness, indulge in extra-marital affairs, adultery, be cocky and mean, employ ruthless measures in business and work and yet hold a respectable position in society. Whereas women cannot venture to do half of what the men get away with before being labelled vicious, mean, hard and witches.
A whole section of population voluntarily calling themselves "MUHAJIRS" or immigrants. Why after 64 years of creation of this country, we still have people marginalizing themselves under ethnic guise, and giving up their own right to be a legitimate part of the nation by harking back to their migrant status? And the best part being, that those who rally under this banner are born and bred here in this country, and have never set foot in India in their lives!
Unwanted, Unsolicited, unwarranted advise. In Pakistan, people make other people's business their concern and give out advices by the dozens - on how best to live your life, what all you are doing wrong, how to raise you child, who to befriend, how to deal with your servants if you have any, and last but not the least, how to worship your god.
Plastic faced, supremely artificial and fake women - who would plaster on a super-duper fake smile which stretches their muscles in a spasm and make them look something like JOKER in Batman. Add to this all kind of superficial, vacuous talk! uffff, the inquiries of health, well-being and your family - while the eyes of the person posing these very questions are empty or thinking of something else. Maybe there is something seriously wrong with me but for the life of me I cannot keep up a conversation with women like these! So spare me GOD!
