Let's be "HOLIER THAN THOU".....

from 1st ramazan to the 29th or the 30th whatever the case may be!!

At least this is the resolve every year, to be a better human being, to get closer to Allah by following his tenets, to be somewhat, in these days be holier than others, and carry that image on one's shoulder.... Am I being sarcastic? ...Am I? can I for this month not put away my cynicism and believe, albeit, just for the 30 days in the goodness and clean intentions of Pakistani Muslims?

Probably not, nay, of course not!

I would have faith in us if and only if - we stop killing and mauling each other! Is that a very impossible call? Perhaps, but that is the only time I would actually believe in our motives, and truthfulness of our aims - which is to please Allah. For the next four weeks despite all overt stances to be good and pious - the worst of our characters (if there can possibly be anything worse than what we are) will manifest itself. There would be long rows of Pakistanis lining up to go for Umra, (presumably to get a clean bill of spiritual health, and on landing back going right back to vices gaalore) tons of men will sport "beards" in an effort to emulate the Prophet PBUH (but the hearts will still be blacker than ever)... and several women will trip over one another to join this or that "Quran classwould that actually make them better?)" The emphasis should be to know more and more ways of getting closer to GOD which is all laudable provided they are genuine, simple and less exhibitionist!

What I want to know is...why only be good in Ramazan? and not the rest of the 11 months? You would say, this is a special month, the Quran started to get revealed in this holy month, and God himself proclaims that during this time the doors of Jannat are kept open and Shaitan is locked up! It is a wonderful opportunity for us to look within ourselves and try to correct our thoughts, our intentions, and our minds, for that is where all our actions spring from, and perhaps all our vices.

I think, the best possible way to start being a better person in this most gracious of months is to kinder and tolerant of one another particularly in the strife-prone areas of our country and the rest of the world. Lets, not make our masjids haven for militancy that aims at dissension and hate. Lets, for once aim to not kill innocent people for obscure political and other ends.

Can we for once display simple decent behavior? We in this country, come Ramazan will be all set to be good, but will curse the hell out of each other on the road, we will not work in offices, particularly, government offices, what with the short timings and roza! We will be dishonest in every other respect towards our country-men, say by hoarding essential eatables like sugar and atta!

Hordes of beggars and would-be beggars will descend upon the city from up country to take advantage of the charitable spirit of the momins, Uffff! which is sheer business acumen and have little to do with deserving, and does little by way of channeling the funds wisely, except for irritating the person on the road.

I want to see what and how we carry ourselves this ramazan, hopefully the first step would be play down one's own attempts to be better and holier than others!
