BOL ---- speak!

is an incredible movie, excellent endeavor in getting the attention of a nation of spaced out zombies we call Pakistanis. The movie is an exaggeration of course but then what isn't in this twisted world of ours where 'hypocrisy' is the rule of the day. All vile, awful, disgusting, horrible, lewd, heart-rending vices are found flourishing in this society we like to call PURE or Pak, and the worst of all is the non-freedom of expression hence the title BOL which which simply means say something, speak, utter, reveal, let it out!

We are a bunch of hypocritical venomous holier-than-thou kind of people, who love to ridicule others but have no compunction or conscience to venture close to home, look at their own surroundings and question or speak up and say how it is! There is simply an embargo on saying anything remotely disturbing for fear of unleashing one of the draconian laws by which the state within the state rules us in totality and keeps us in fear! And then our upbringing and our education, if we are fortunate enough to have one, isn't cut out to train us in asking questions that disturbs or somehow is against the status-quo, we are trained, nay, brain-washed in our nurturing in accepting things as they are and going into denial if they seem to be somehow in opposition to our sense of right. We have an undeniable belief in the goodness of our society and its harbingers, its keepers like the maulvis, the pirs and our elders be it the family, the tribe, or other. We don't like to stand up against the tide, do something different for that means ostracizing oneself from the society and the family.

In this Islamic state of Pakistan, do things like sodomy, rape, transvestites happen? and happen in apparently 'respectable families?? NO! never, they simply do not exist! Boys from good families cannot, must not have 'gay' tendencies because it is a cause of utter shame! A man must behave 'normal' and be manly and copulate with women and only women - but, on the sly you have a whole culture that does accept it as and lives it - the truck-wala culture, and the men that indulge in it are very 'manly' and hence no one can say much to them on their faces! sheer hypocrisy it is, they may have sex with young boys kept as apprentices and yet have a respectable image in the society and father many children by wives that they have! and hell no one says a word! and at every other pretense the 'Islam' of such men is in danger - be it an insignificant cartoon in an equally obscure paper in some non-country of Europe, or the Israelis bombing Gaza for the millionth time? What are we then??

What of the 'self-appointed' keepers of the faith who have no faith in themselves and the GOD that they acknowledge! hence the maulvi living a despicable life treating his women in the worst possible manner and then going to the 'dargah' to pray for a son! We are actually confused people so rightly pointed out by the "PIMP" in the movie, that we end up confusing GOD in praying for contradictory things and ways! The unnecessary hatred towards the Shias by the sunnis and vice versa, the implacable attitude of a father to marry off his daughters to old men as long as they belong to the right lineage!

We see these things all the time, add to it, INCEST, yes that does take place in the most respectable of families, how about abuse of 'female staff' by their rich masters while the women of the house look the other way, for they have no choice at times. The molestation of young children in the hands of their carers and teachers and muallanas, why don't we talk about such ugly truths and address them?

We don't want to accept the horrendous truths like fathers who say nimaz five times a day and keep a foot long beard sexually assaulting their daughters and sons, we cannot accept that siblings have illicit sexual relationships, we obviously don't want to talk of mother-in-laws sleeping with their son-in-laws, and why must we ever think about very young girls being married off to men who are almost half in their graves!

All the dirt must and is swept under the carpet and on the face of it we are the proud Muslims, Pakistanis with pure hearts and even purer souls, its just that its so much more convenient this way and suits every one.
