We have touched rock bottom. We as a nation, a country, a religious community, a social group, a society, as mere human-beings have lost all sense of proportion as Kafka would put it aptly 'black is white and white black', nothing is as it ought to be in this rotten State of Pakistan. We are amoral people, a people who are desensitizied and anesthezied to the point of no return. For a professed religious country we have no concept of morality. Morality to us is doing what is right as defined by the complicated rules and dictums of Islam. We must 'do' what we are told to do by the religion, but how far we do it or not is a matter between individual and God. The fact that a person does not do anything to prevent harm or wrong as long as it isn't defined as his duty by religion to do so he feels he is doing nothing immoral or wrong.
My head hangs in shame. I sit mute infront of the TV watching heart rending scenes of bodies of shias brutally murdered in Quetta wrapped in shrouds, attended by their relatives awaiting burial. Can we, for even one fraction of a second, put ourselves in the shoes of the mourners? I simply cannot, its just too painful, no its imcomprehensible. The picture is surreal, eyes speaking volumes where tongues fall silent. And, it has been three days and three long nights that this protest is going on while the Chief Minister of the province is away holidaying in the UAE. It takes 3 days for the Premier of the country and the mighty Khan to reach Quetta a mere hour and half flight from most large cities of the country! We are truly shameless. Who cares if there are over 100 unburied bodies lying out in sub-zero temperatures of Quetta, as long as the government of the day can ignore the event, it will.
But, hats off to the Hazara community who with their resilience and steadfastness have kept up the peaceful protest - they refuse to bury their dead till the army is called or governor rule isn't imposed in Baluchistan. Not unreasonable demands in light of ground realities. But even after 7 hours of deliberations in the Governor house Quetta no concrete announcement has been yet made. Now that the protests have reached a country wide momentum and people are raising their voices (perhaps shia community in other cities) that the government finds itself betwteen a rock and a hard place.
At this point in time I personally feel like converting and proclaiming the shia doctrine, which I feel is as good an Islam as any there could be. Now one can get a sense of what 1920's and 30's East Europe would have been for the Jews. Aren't there glaring similarties? aren't these the same horrendous crimes against a people because of the who they are? and their beliefs/history? What would be asked of the shias next? a colored armband so they can be distinguished in public? or would we be happy by forcing them out of their jobs and homes and relegating them to 'ghettos'? We are hate-mongers, and need excuses to destroy and maim amd injure and hurt. We love to malign and destruct and all this we do in the name of religion. Can for once we leave our religion out of it?
We are the neo-fascists and the neo Nazis, those who harbor hate and anger, those who kill for the sake of killing, we are the scum of the earth.
Great piece. I wrote something similar on the same topic, if you'd like to check it out:
