Is it just me or other people are also a bit tired of being shown the right path by 'the so not-holy-themselves' on TV in Ramazan this year? I mean hello??? what are they thinking and who are they fooling, do they really take the public to be so gullible and stupid to put on shows like these hosted by people who are hardly the acme of 'virtue' in whatever personal way they can be, rather, they have been publicly denounced for their outrageous behaviours that crosses the norms of decency let alone religion!
Just yesterday I switched on the TV and guess who was teaching the meaning of Quran in a very formal library kind of setting looking rather like a lawyer's office? It was none other than our former minister of law and the right hand man of Mr. Zardari, Babar Awan! Since when has he become an authority on all things Islamic? and since when can he interpret the meaning and context of Hadiths??? and who are the people listening to him and exactly why?
Out of all the fraudsters, the trophy goes to Aamir Liaqaut, yes the singer cum dramatist, cum host, cum teacher, cum drunkard, cum womaniser and now recently a healer if I understand the gist of his show completely, not that I want to. He was kicked out of Geo TV a few years back on account of a rather embarrassing scandal involving darkened glasses of his car, inebriated condition and the company of some infamous women in rather scanty clothing in a compromising position. So what's changed now that he is back with a bang and gathering crowds like never before? This nation disgusts me!
I believe even the dancing queen Veena Malik also had or wanted a stint on TV to do an Islamic show. Well, we all have hopes and we all can dream. All the morning shows have this austere look with hosts covering their heads and donning sombre faces, and talk is of 'good' and 'giving' and so on and so forth. One of the channels I was watching, can't remember which one, where the guy was saying we have sinned and we must pray all the time to God to forgive us?? Where did he get this from? It certainly isn't an Islamic injunction where the concept of God is merciful and Raheem, this to me sounded more like the idea of the 'original sin' in Christianity where one is born a sinner and must all his life atone for the sins of Adam and eve.
Then what's with the naat competition a la Indian Idol style, what's wrong with us? why do we do this and make a monkey out of ourselves? why?? Why can't we have some intelligent and reasonable discussions on what is Islam and what it is teaching us that we are so badly missing the point of? Why can't we make the messages simple and say that roza means controlling your anger and not bursting out in rage on the road after 3 pm or not trying to kill every other person who gets jalebi or samosa before you in a shop. These may be self-evident truth, but in a society like ours the obvious things are the ones that are missing from the scene.
And, finally, a word about the adverts in Ramazan. I mean what family scenarios are they projecting? whose houses are they showing? where are these people who are all serene and calm and smiling and living in harmony? Do we have such clean air and hazy sunsets, and vibrant colors, do we have large families all living under one roof in affluence enjoying iftar in goodwill, is there a Pakistan where fear, terror, guards, guns, dirt, filth do not exist?
What is all this sanitation in RAMAZAN all about and somehow why does it sound, look and feel so fake?
