In the course of my working life as a government servant I learnt many lessons, not all of them pleasant, but nonetheless very telling of the Pakistani character. Now, working privately, I see the same Pakistani character coming through in many myriad ways - it is actually funny how seriously incorrigible we are as people, how we refuse to learn in the face of harsh reality, how ostrich like our behavior where we try and hide ourselves away from the big issues and focus on small things that get us no where, how blatantly dishonest we are to our work and to the people we work for;

the Pakistani at work (irrespective of gender)

A lot of hot air - voluble to the max about what he has done, what he has achieved, what he has brought to the organization, how disastrous the situation was and how brilliantly he has changed it for the better! and all this with a straight face in front of sharp evidence to the contrary! their sentences start this way "Madam! aap nahi janti! (what?) kitna log yahan ghommatay hain, aur galat batein kartein hain" errr.. excuse me, but we were discussing something practical like employee no.X not working! Who cares? what the subject is? whenever work and efficiency or output is brought to the table the conversation will suddenly veer off to the dark diabolical forces wt work to set the powers that be against the poor fellow SIMPLY BECAUSE he is such an excellent worker! evidence be damned!

Raising your voice whenever you are asked to explain your position! Especially, women, and the tears aren't that far away either, you ask the bloody women anything and suddenly it's an attack on their integrity, their work, their person, their self-esteem, and then, "Madam, abb to mein ye kam nahi karoun gi bus, meray oopar itne ilzam lagay jatay hain, sub meray kilaf hain" errr... the same people you were having tea and samosa a while back and planning a shopping trip with for the afternoon!!! Kill me.

Then the poius busy body who is only reporting on others!!! why why why! leave me alone and do your work! don't tell me a million times 'may haram nahi khata!!!!" so what can I do?

Then the eternal silent impossibly inefficient worker whom you can't even yell at because he is so bad he doesn't even know he is doing anything wrong! It's like hitting your head against the wall.

Then finally, the smart alec, who will have - ALWAYS, by mistake, double checks for you to sign (cash of course) in a hurry. The "khancha' guy who sees his benefit even in a trip to the store and believe me gets a benefit out of it one way or the other!

I give up!
