BLOWING YOUR OWN TRUMPET!

If you ask me what Pakistanis excel at - it would be one thing and one thing only - and that is SELF-ADULATION, SELF-PRAISE, SELF-PROMOTION, SHOWING-OFF, an incessant desire to make public, to announce shouting hoarse at the next microphone of what meagre good we do. And POOF! goes off all the effort genuine or not! Why are we so hung up on validation, why are we so impatient and literally eyeing that proverbial pat on the back, why are we so desperate to tell of our good deeds so that the others may acknowledge us as the beacon of light, as the angel of good-tidings, as the sure incumbent of a lift to heaven!

It could be any disaster in the country and we have had quite a few unfortunately in the last few years, and the upper rich class goes on a philanthropic drive, raising money, collecting goods such as tents, clothing, dry ration, medicines and then transport them to the affectees. Excellent work no doubt! And all kudos to these very conscious and altruistic people. BUT! and there is a huge but! why can't they stop telling everyone and anyone alive, dead, comatose, and all in between, what all they have done for the people and, pause -- how good and wonderful people they are for doing all this charity wotk! the status bars of people on facebook, and twitter and BBM is the same, sounding all serious and pious - "We have taken so many trucks in such and such area we collected so and so amount of stuff and errrr.... (we are such great people for doing this while all you ass holes sit on your haunches and bitch about us.

I am so odeed on these self-congratulating fools - honey, my advice is, and I believe there is a hadith that seconds it, something about the left hand not knowing what the right gives as charity. That is the spirit of true giving and caring, not, doing the rounds because it is the next "IN" thing to do. This isn't a social DO my dears, and this doing good is more to appease your own souls and those of your friends and acquaintances rather than just for Allah's good grace.

The issue is - that other people should be singing their laurels, instead of they themselves going on and on, about what and how they are helping the poor. If it is website that talks about the work of the NGO well and good, but in cases of personal effort the job of marketing A) should be left to observers and the beneficiaries, and B) must never be put as a status of facebook!

UFFFF, Its almost embarrassing to read how many truck loads of goods they have personally hauled to the flood hit areas, how they will go again, and how other yuppies must do the same. Please, people show some dignity, some decorum, and for GOD'S SAKE find some other activity to indulge your silly little selves!
