Our only salvation lies in expanding our horizons, learning about other cultures, about other lives, history of our own country, of the world, of its people, if we read we live even for a minuscule time the lives of others, we glimpse into alien worlds and maybe in the end pick up newer ways of looking and thinking about the same things. If we pick up a book, any book, and read we open our minds and our thoughts to perhaps novel ideas, new and different ways of looking at life and tackling it.
Reading makes us richer in our thoughts and in our language, it teaches us that we live in a diverse world, it teaches us that people who we hate for reasons of ethnicity, race and language also have their view-points, we may not agree to them, but they still have a right to hold their views which to them are as valid as ours are to us. Reading opens us to the various manifestations of the human mind and soul, it tells us stories of people that may have lived ,or that may have inhabited the imagination of some writers. It tells us about the power of the word, and how language can change the destiny of people. How beautiful words can be when in the hands of poets and brilliant authors.
Above all, reading shifts the focus from our own myopic world and its problems, we become one of the cogs of the whole machine of the Universe, we are not the center as we might be thinking, merely a minute part and that gives us perspective. Reading stories of courage and valor inspire us, give us hope, make us want to work hard and not give hope. Reading is food for the soul, and anyone who doesn't read is missing a pleasure beyond all pleasures.
