If you are a delinquent, a little insane, angry at the world, nurse misogynistic tendencies, have criminal inclinations, want to show rage at women, desire to harm women and abuse them, please take the first flight into the wonder land called Pakistan where you would be able to do as your heart desires without any interference from the law. In the unlikely event of some misreporting on your activities lands you in trouble with the police and the courts all you have to do is appeal to the Supreme Court of Pakistan and get acquitted.
Such is the sordid reality in Pakistan, despite a law in effect making verbal and physical abuse against women a crime and a punishable offense it is very hard to bring criminals to justice. There are so many lacunaes and so many loopholes in the statutes that laws become ineffective, and then laws are only as good as their implementation, and the will to impose them against perpetrators of crime against women is zero. This has to do with our mental psyche and the way women are viewed in our society.
If a woman is beaten up by her husband or father, its more or less assumed that she was up to no good and was put rightly in her place. Violence against women in domestic arena is rampant and very educated and socially popular souls who come across as complete 'sweet hearts' are wife beaters. Why don't women report them? It is hard, because bringing family issues in public is considered rude and crass amongst us, we like to white wash and keep a happy face. Moreover an abused woman is a shattered being, she isn't in her right mental state to take rational decisions hence the low rate of such women leaving their abusive husbands.
Rape involves bigger issues such as the the four witnesses required under Islamic law. That probably made sense in earlier times and still does in case of libel and false accusations to basically safeguard the honor of a woman. But in our country where everything is inversed and defies logic it becomes a cover, a shield behind which all rapists can easily hide. Moreover, the judiciary isn't free and fair in our Pak land, courts, judges all and sundry are for sale and a desired order can be passed if you know the right people.
So Pakistan is not the most ideal place to be if you are woman, and certainly not if your a woman in distress.
